Canadian Premium cocktail


Earlier this month we heard whisky expert Jim Murray on the radio talking about the best whiskies in the world today, a surprising number of which are made outside of Scotland. He mentioned in passing that we in Canada have one of the top whiskies in the world that we can buy in plastic bottles, very affordably, and it isn’t available anywhere else because we simply don’t market it! He was referring to Alberta Premium rye whisky. I hadn’t bought a bottle in awhile (I was enjoying their Dark Horse rye instead) but in honour of this recognition I did so, and it is super smooth in this tasty end of fall cocktail. It’s a 100% rye, which is a rarity among Canadian whisky these days, even though they are pretty much all referred to as ryes informally.

1 1/2 oz rye whisky (Alberta Premium preferred)
2 oz cranberry juice
1/2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice, fine strained
Generous dash cranberry bitters

Jour de l’An cocktail


1 inch slice of crystallized ginger, minced
3 dashes Fee Brothers cranberry bitters
10 cranberries
1/2 oz Cointreau
1 oz Lillet Blanc
1 oz vodka
1 oz POM pomegranate juice

In a cocktail shaker muddle together the minced ginger, cranberries, cranberry bitters and Cointreau. Add ice to the shaker and add Lillet, vodka and POM. Shake well. Fine strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with cranberries and a slice of crystallized ginger.

Persimmonious (January 5, 2013)

1 1/2 oz vodka
3/4 oz finely strained persimmon pulp
3/4 oz orange juice
1/2 oz vanilla syrup
3 drops cranberry bitters

Before Christmas I bought a small crate of persimmons, and then sort of forgot about them. Today they seemed to stare accusingly at me out of the fruit bowl. They were getting pretty overripe and squidgy, so i decided to use the pulp to make a cocktail. So I was parsimonious with my persimmons!

Chatelaine cocktail (December 9, 2012)

A variation on a Cosmopolitan cocktail. Chatelaine is the name of a Canadian women’s magazine (a lot more recipes; a lot less sex).

1 1/2 oz vodka
3/4 oz pomegranate juice
3/4 oz lemon juice
1/4 oz Cointreau
Generous dash cranberry bitters
Garnish with cranberries
